When the news reaches Russia, their fairytale is in jeopardy and his parents head to New York to have the marriage annulled
Synopsis
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets the son of an oligarch and marries him on the spur of the moment. … IMDb editor Arno Kazarian gives brief glimpses of 12 films he has screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including “Anora” and the dangerous, strangely erotic “Misericordia” …
Quoted in “Close-Up: Anora” (2024)
At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker would act out a variety of sex positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to show the actors what he wanted from them. … The setting is tantalizing.
Then the story captivates us
Mikey Madison plays the title role, a New York lap dancer. She unwisely marries (the immature young son of a Russian oligarch) and then gets herself into a terrible fix. Madison has a standout performance, but all the performances are good.
The ending is no disappointment
The excess of nudity and sex is unfashionable for a mainstream film, but both this and the high drama – increasingly comic – have a rare vibrancy. The striking locations – Las Vegas and Coney Island out of season – are also skillfully captured. At well over two hours, the film is too long, but it just about holds our attention because we can’t imagine how it’s going to end.
This is dynamic material from a fearless director
Screenings at the London Film Festival were sold out, and I’m not surprised. Check out the full program for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
